The Surrealist Art of Rafal Olbinski

In the words of Richard Wilde, Chairman, Graphic Design and Advertising, School of Visual Arts, New York:

May it be fine art, poster or illustration, through contradiction, absurdity and the banal, truth resides.  This is where Rafal Olbinski’s contributions are realized.  He explores the hidden properties of his subject matter which results in poetic compositions that encompass a great stillness.  It is this very experience which nourishes.  It is no accident that the power of his imagery touches most everyone.  By not being restricted exclusively to gallery exhibitions, Rafal’s work has impacted throughout the world.  His posters and paintings are a testament to raising the consciousness of a world starved for new impressions.

I interviewed for a small graphic design job at a local newspaper while I was in high school, several years ago. I’d been working with Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro for some time at that point. The interviewer asked me to make a test ad for a retirement home to see my skills. I created the ad, explained my choices, and the interviewer seemed very pleased with my work. 

I didn’t hear anything about the job for a few weeks, so I figured I didn’t get it. Lo and behold, one day I opened the paper and discovered that they’d used my design without my knowledge. 

I’m happy to report that this paper didn’t last very long.

Originally from Scotland, two years into his career he moved over three thousand miles from home into his current position (Graphic Design Director at Ubisoft Montréal); becoming the youngest director at the largest games development studio in the world.

Marilyn Mugot’s Night Project

Marilyn Mugot is a French graphic designer and photographer who hails from the Paris suburbs where she began drawing at an early age. Having joined a school of graphic design at the end of her adolescence, she soon found her love of photography supplanting her passion for drawing.

Marilyn Mugot is passionate about cinema, and photography is a means for her to realise her own scenarios with atmospheres she invents and imagines. Her ethereal and saturated landscapes diverge from the everyday, constructing an entirely different reality.

The Art of Jay Maisel 

After studying painting and graphic design at Cooper Union and Yale, Jay Maisel began his career in photography in 1954. While his portfolio includes the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Miles Davis, he is perhaps best known for capturing the light, color, and gesture found in every day life. This unique vision kept him busy for over 40 years shooting annual reports, magazine covers, jazz albums, advertising and more for an array of clients worldwide. 

Since he stopped taking on commercial work in the late ’90s, Jay has continued to focus on his personal work. He has developed a reputation as a giving and inspiring teacher as a result of extensive lecturing and photography workshops throughout the country.
